Liufang
Unparalleled in the universe as we know it, Liufang (劉芳Liúfāng), from Yunnan Province, China, is one of the most prominent pipa players in the world. (Talk about beauty, style and grace – Most of us don’t even get close!) This is a true master.
The Chinese pipa (琵琶 pípá) originated in China during the Qin dynasty (221 – 206 BCE) and is a very famous classical Chinese instrument, similar to the guzheng and erhu. It emits a hypnotizing sound… like running water. There’s even a Tai Chi position termed 手揮琵琶, or playing the lute, that’s named after it.
If you enjoy traditional Chinese music, you will definitely like Liufang on the pipa or guzheng. And if you’re not a fan yet, well…you SHOULD be!! :-)
Check her out!
This piece, called ‘Wild Geese Descending on the Sandy Beach,’ was performed at the CBC studio in Toronto. Enjoy!
